The overall analysis found that jogging, mountain climbing, walking, exercise walking, international standard dancing, and a longer practice of yoga were effective in offsetting obesity genes.

“Our findings show that the genetic effects on obesity measures can be decreased to various extents by performing different kinds of exercise. The benefits of regular physical exercise are more impactful in subjects who are more predisposed to obesity,” Lin and colleagues conclude.

The study included 76 adults with moderate stress levels. Of the participants, 36 were Spanish-speaking adults and 40 were non-Latino, English-speaking adults. Participants randomly participated in either the mindful awareness or health education program.

Instructor guided people in the mindful awareness program with mindfulness techniques while doing regular activities including sitting, eating or walking. People in the health education received instructions in factors such as diet and nutrition, mental health, participants, and substance abuse.

Participants in both groups reported improvements in depression and stress as well as increased mindfulness-awareness. According to researchers, compared to participants in the health education group, the Spanish-speaking participants in the mindfulness meditation program scored almost 12 points higher on the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire.

“Community-based interventions are needed to reduce the risk of depression and other adverse mental health outcomes in the U.S and around the world,” said study author Dr. Michael Irwin.

The team then used an approved anxiety scale to accurately capture levels of anxiety in adult participants.

The results found similar changes in preoperative anxiety levels in both groups.

“The only real difference was that people who listened to music felt less satisfied than those in the drug group. We believe that this reaction may have been influenced by the participants’ not being able to choose the piece of music.” The researchers said.

The previous study that appeared in Southern Medical Journal has shown that a tune with an estimated 60 beats per minute, and without lyrics, a significant change in tempo or rhythm effectively reduces anxiety.

Professor Wilkinson, who led this study said: “This study raises the intriguing possibility that some aspects of Parkinson’s disease may be better managed if traditional drug therapies are combined with gentle, non-invasive stimulation of the balance organs.”

The researchers suggest that traditional drug therapies can be combined with non-invasive stimulation to better manage Parkinson’s disease. However, they also said that more research is needed to understand how this therapy works to relieve troublesome symptoms related to Parkinson’s disease.

The study findings now appear in the journal Parkinsonism and Related Disorders.

“The results are very encouraging. Achieving both widespread efficacy and durable gains in motor and specifically non-motor aspects of Parkinson’s disease would be quite novel, and improvements in non-motor symptoms would be especially notable,” Professor Ray Chaudhuri said.
